Wells

There are 20 wells distributed in different places within Al-Aqsa Mosque; 8 wells are over the nave of the Dome of the Rock, and the rest of them are in the mosque’s square. Some wells are old and others are new. The wells contain enough water for all the residents of the Old Town. The most popular wells are Al-Ghwanmeh, Al-Janneh, and Al-Ward wells.

    Landmark Location: It is just east of Bab Al-Mgharba. And is considered to be one of Al-Aqsa Mosque entrance gates.

  • Al-Maghrebi well

    Landmark Location: Located to the east of the museum building.

    Details of the shape:
    Rectangular room. It is 17 meters long, 12 meters wide, and 7 meters deep. It has two openings. Al-Omari stated as describing it:” Near the honorary corner, one.”

  • The Black Well

    Landmark Location: Located north of Al-Qibli Mosque and east of Al-Kaas spring.

    Details of the shape:
    The largest well, with a capacity of about (8 million litres). It is 40m long, 30m wide, and 14m deep. The well has three openings.

  • The Western Well of Al-Ka’as

    Landmark Location: Located west of Al-Ka’as Spring, south of Al-Aqsa Mosque.

    Reason of the name:Named after its location west of Al-Ka’as Spring.

    Details of the shape:
    Medium-sized, rectangular.

    It’s one of Al-Aqsa Mosque’s wells. It’s located west of Al-Ka’as Spring, south of Al-Aqsa Mosque and the Dome of the Rock. It was named after its location. It’s a rectangular Medium-sized well

  • The Lake Well

    Landmark Location: Located to the west of the eastern Marwani square.

    Details of the shape:
    It is considered to be one of the largest wells. It is (36 m) long, (6 m) wide, and maximum (20 meters) deep. The well has two openings.

  • Al-Waraqa Well (Paper Well)

    Landmark Location: It is located east of Al-Aqsa Mosque hallway, under Al-Qibli Mosque.

    Reason of the name:Named after its shape that resembles paper.

    Details of the shape:
    It is 18 meters long, 13 meters deep, and 1.6 in diameter. The well was linked to pipes. The shape of the well resembles paper, and it has two openings.

  • The Eastern Well of Omar Mosque

    Landmark Location: East of Omar Mosque.

    Reason of the name:Named after its location east of Omar Mosque.

    It has an opening next to the stores. The well is long, and extends to the fences of Al-Aqsa mosque and the town. It is about 33 meters long, 9 meters wide, and 16 meters deep.

  • Al-Romaneh well

    Landmark Location: Located under the nave of the rock; south of the dome of the chain.

    Details of the shape:
    -Has a rectangular shape, consisting of four rooms; the largest one is 4.5 meters long, and 4.6 meters wide, and has two openings.
    -The guards of Al-Aqsa Mosque open the wells daily to ensure there is enough water, to ensure that Israeli excavations do not pass through the network of the wells scattered beneath the mosque.

    It consists of two long chambers, with stone walls. It is 22 meters long.

  • QaitBay Spring’s Well

    Landmark Location: Under Qaitbay spring; under the western hallway.

     Details of the shape:
    -It’s long and thin. Its ground and walls are covered with cement. It’s 28 meters long, 6 meters wide, and 11.5 meters deep.
    -Back in the day, it was pathway following Bab Al-Sakeenah (Al-Sakeenah Gate), and when the gate was closed, its basement was closed and turned into a well.

  • Bab Al-Nathir well

    Landmark Location: Near Bab Al-Nathir at the northeast corner of the corridor, aside from the Manjikiya school (Department of Endowment).

    Reason of the name:Named after its location next to Bab Al-Nathir.

    Medium size; round shape, 3 meters long , 2 meters wide, and 11.5 meters deep.

    This well is located next to Bab Al-Nathir, at the northeast corner of the corridor aside from the Manjikiya school (Department of Endowment). It is Medium size; round shape, 3 meters long, 2 meters wide, and 11.5 meters deep.

  • Al-Ghawanmeh Well

    Landmark Location: It is located east of Bab al-Guanameh minaret, adjacent to the school’s wall in the north.

    Round shape; small size.

  • Bab Al-Asbat Minaret’s Well

    Landmark Location: In the southern side of Bab Al-Asbat minaret.

    Details of the shape:
    It is 7 meters long, 4 meters wide, and 6 meters deep, with stone walls.

  • Bab Hetta Well

    Landmark Location: South Bab Hetta, adjacent to the terrace.

  • Al- joura Well (Al-Kaas)

    Landmark Location relative to Dome of the rock: It is located west of Qubbat Al-Sakhra (Dome of the Rock).

    Reason of the name:Named after the shape of its top, which resembles a long marble cup. 

    Details of the shape:
    -It is medium sized with a rectangular shape. It’s up to 4.8 in diameter, and 3.6 wide and long.
    -Al-Omari stated about this well saying: “And in the west side there are three wells; one of them is known as AL-Kaas (the cup) because its top resembles a long marble cup”.

    An Overview of the Landmark:
    It is located west of Qubbat Al-Sakhra (Dome of the Rock). It is medium sized with a rectangular shape. It’s up to 4.8 in diameter, and 3.6 wide and long. Al-Omari stated about this well saying: “And in the west side there are three wells; one of them is known as AL-Kaas ( the cup ) because its top resembles a long marble cup”.

  • Al-Khalili well

    Landmark Location relative to Dome of the rock: Located in the nave of the rock, straight forward to the east of the Office of the Reconstruction Committee.

    Reason of the name:It was called by its name because it is located next to Al-Khalili dome.

    Details of the shape:
    Small in size and is more like an irregular warehouse, with an eastern depth (2.5 meters).

    An Overview of the Landmark:
    Located in the nave of the rock, just to the east of the Office of the Reconstruction Committee, called by its name because it is near the dome of Al-Khalili.

    Landmark Location: Named after its location west of Bab Al-tawba 

    Reason of the name:It is located west of Bab Al-Tawba and AL-Rahma, with a slight deviation to the north.

    Roller shape. It’s 6 meters in diameter, and 11 meters deep.

  • The Northeastern Well of the Eastern Pillars

     

    Landmark Location: Northwest of the Eastern Pillars.

    Details of the shape:
    It’s in a rhombus shape, and has a roof that resembles the barrel.

  • The Northern Well of the Eastern Pillars

    Landmark Location: North of the Teachers Room. It extends for a long distance under the nave of the Rock.

    Reason of the name:Named after its location north of the Eastern Pillars.

    Details of the shape:
    It’s 23 meters long, 3 meters wide, and 8 meters deep.

    This well is located north of the Eastern Pillars and of the Teachers Room. It extends for a long distance under the nave of the Rock.It’s 23 meters long, 3 meters wide, and 8 meters deep.
